What Is Crab Grass and How to Get Rid of It

It's everywhere. No place can escape it. What is it you ask? Crabgrass is how it is commonly known. Did you know that there are two varieties of crabgrass? There's the smooth type called Digitaria Ischaemun and there is the large and hairy type called D. sanguinalis. No matter what the variety, it is a source of frustration for many a homeowner.

First, let's discuss exactly what crabgrass is. In the world of horticulture is annual which simply means that it occurs once with seeding. The reason it appears year after year is because it regrows from the seeds that it drops during the spring and summer.

We can see it everywhere around us. It was originally native to Europe. Crabgrass is commonly called a weed but it too is actually a grass. If left unchecked crabgrass is so strong that it will choke the life out of the surrounding grasses. So lets us look at how it grows and ways to prevent it from growing.

The growing season for crabgrass begins around spring into summer and it is best to tackle the issue before mid-May. Crabgrass can be found around warm, moist areas on a lawn and they love to grow on curbs, sidewalks, and driveways.

The one thing on the agenda once you establish that you have crabgrass is how to get rid of it. If you try to use the organic way it requires that you keep a lush thick lawn but means constant care and keeping a watchful eye on any areas that is bare. Make sure to clean your garden or backyard periodically before the crabgrass grows even longer.

Other than that, more than likely most of the time chemicals are used. One of those chemicals is preemergent herbicides. This product comes in either granular form or liquid form. The way it works is to place a barrier over the affected area and prevent the seeds from sprouting

If you use this method it is important that you know the process of germination because timing is important. This method may be the best way to kill crabgrass.

The best way to control it is to keep a healthy lawn and of course, there is always the old-fashioned way which is to pull it out by hand. Whichever method you choose it's clear that no one want's a lawn filled with crabgrass. Here's to a beautiful, healthy lawn for your house.
